The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has debunked reports suggesting that incumbent local government chairmen seeking reelection have been directed to resign ahead of the 2025 council polls. The party’s spokesperson, Mr. Seye Oladejo, dismissed the claims as false and misleading in a statement issued on Monday evening.
“Our attention has been drawn to a false directive purportedly issued by the Lagos State Chairman of APC, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, to incumbent council chairmen who intend to seek reelection to resign from their offices,” Oladejo said. “We want to make it abundantly clear that there is no iota of truth in the publication, as it was twisted to suit the interest of the publisher.”
Clarification of the Directive
Oladejo explained that the directive in question was specifically addressed to APC Local Government party chairmen seeking elective offices. He emphasized that such individuals could not simultaneously act as umpires and contestants in the forthcoming elections.
“On the contrary, the directive issued was to APC Local Government party chairmen seeking elective offices during the forthcoming elections to resign their positions,” Oladejo clarified. “They cannot be umpires and contestants at the same time.”
Call for Unity and Focus
The APC spokesperson urged party members and the public to refrain from spreading misinformation that could disrupt party unity and stir unnecessary tension. He also highlighted that the party is awaiting electoral guidelines from the newly reconstituted Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).
“We wish to enjoin party members and the general public to refrain from peddling misleading information that can heat the polity,” Oladejo said. “All members should continue to promote activities that foster party cohesion and understanding.”
The APC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring transparency and fairness in its internal processes as it prepares for the 2025 council elections. Party members have been urged to focus on strengthening unity and advancing the party’s objectives in Lagos State.
