Police Arrest Suspected Gang Members in Mbarara City

By Gilbert Akampa Kakurugu,

Police in Mbarara have arrested three suspects believed to be part of criminal gangs that have been terrorizing residents in the city.

The City Police Commander, Kenneth Kabwigo said the suspects were found in possession of narcotic substances, house-breaking tools and dangerous weapons among other items.

He noted that the crackdown follows a series of attempted murders and violent attacks reported weekly across Mbarara.

Residents recall recent incidents, including the shocking case of a University of St Joseph’s student who was struck with a paver while returning home after watching an Arsenal football match. Several others have narrowly survived attacks by assailants wielding pangas at their gates.

Authorities say the arrests mark a significant step in curbing the rising wave of violent crime in the city.

Kabwigo said investigations are ongoing to dismantle the wider network of gangs operating in the city.
