BRICS Summit: Okonjo- Iweala meets Tinubu, congratulates Nigeria - See why

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday met Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a former Nigerian finance minister and the current Director General of the World Trade Organisation, WTO on the sidelines of the ongoing 17th BRICS Summit.

Okonjo-Iweala announced the meeting with Tinubu on her twitter handle early Sunday morning. However, she also said she used to opportunity to discuss Nigeria’s successful bid for Women Exporters in the Digital Economy Fund, WEIDE Fund.

The WTO boss noted that fund will help scale up women owned enterprises in the digital space.

She also congratulated Nigeria for successful bid for the fund.

Talking about Nigeria’s successful bid for the @WTO-@ITCnews WEIDE Fund, designed to support women in digital trade. This fund will help scale up women owned enterprises in the digital space. Congratulations Nigeria!,” she said in the tweet.

The WEIDE Fund is a joint initiative by the WTO and the International Trade Centre (ITC) aimed at supporting women entrepreneurs in developing countries to expand their businesses through international trade and digitalization

The fund provides grants and technical assistance to women-led micro and small enterprises (MSMEs), with a focus on enhancing their digital skills and access to global markets.

It primarily targets women-led businesses in the formal sector that are either currently exporting or ready to start exporting and seek to leverage on digital technologies and platforms for women entrepreneurs to increase their participation in global value chains.

Specifically, the fund provides grants of up to USD 30,000, to support women-led businesses, with a focus on working capital and equipment and also offered technical assistance to women business owners to develop business acceleration plans in areas like export competitiveness, investment readiness, and digital skills.

The WEIDE Fund collaborates with Business Support Organizations (BSOs) in various countries to strengthen its outreach and impact at the local level.

Tinubu is in Brazil at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
