At the Federal High Court in Abuja, House of Representatives member Obi Aguocha made a passionate plea as the court readied itself to pass judgment on the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu. Aguocha, who represents the Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, said he felt a personal obligation to speak since Kanu is not just his constituent but someone he has known since their school days.
Vanguard reported on Thursday, November 20, 2025, that Aguocha recounted how he and Kanu were classmates in both primary and secondary school. He highlighted that Kanu’s prolonged detention and repeated court appearances have caused significant emotional and personal strain, keeping him distant from his family. According to him, the case now has implications far beyond the courtroom, touching heavily on the peace and stability of the South-East and the broader Nigerian society.
He appealed to the presiding judge to show leniency, stressing that Nigeria is grappling with widespread insecurity and social tension. He warned that the ruling could influence the atmosphere in the region either calming things down or worsening the situation. For this reason, he argued that a merciful judgment would strengthen efforts to sustain peace.
Aguocha also urged the prosecution to acknowledge the larger picture of national insecurity, reminding them that many contributors to Nigeria’s challenges exist beyond those on trial.
He stated, “My lord, I ask for mercy and for clemency. I am pleading for peace and stability, not only in the South-East but across Nigeria. The country is in pain, and we must work together to address the problems we all share.
