Scarlett Johansson was seen in footage taken by celebrity photographer Elder Ordonez filming for her new movie, “The Exorcist,” around March 31 in New York.
The actress was surrounded by a giant crowd of over 200 extras performing as “protestors,” causing confusion among some fans who thought they were real. The funny mix-up prompted one fan to comment on the video, “I understand the protest of the demonic movie, but once again there are SO MANY others things going on in this world to focus on!!” Another confused fan questioned, “Are the protesters part of the movie or are they just wasting everyone’s time?”
However, fans can rest assured that Johansson’s movie isn’t actually being interfered with by anyone. Ordonez confirmed in his caption that the protestors were part of the project, writing, “Scarlett Johansson takes over the Bronx, New York this morning with 200 protesters (extras) on set for The Exorcist.”

The actress rocked long, straight hair and a pair of New Balance shoes. The rest of her costume consisted of tight jeans and a New York Giants sweatshirt, with a long gray coat topping off the look.
“She’s so gorgeous,” wrote one fan, while another observed how pretty she looked without makeup.
A November 2025 Deadline report about the project says it will be a “new radical take,” and quotes its writer and director Mike Flanagan is quoted as saying, “Scarlett is a brilliant actress whose captivating performances always feel grounded and real, from genre films to summer blockbusters, and I couldn’t be happier to have her join this ‘Exorcist’ film.”
The once booming franchise has waned in recent years, with 2023’s “The Exorcist: Believer” grossing a somewhat underwhelming $65.5 million in the US and Canada. The report says Johansson was chosen to star partially because of her success in reviving the “Jurassic World” franchise, with her 2025 summer blockbuster “Jurassic World: Rebirth” raking in almost $900 million.
Deadline says the film, while set in the “Exorcist” universe, will tell a brand new story, and is not a sequel to “Believer.” Flanagan, an experienced master of horror, told The Hollywood Reporter the picture will be “the scariest” movie he’s ever made.
