Governors, Obasanjo, Dangote, other top shots who stormed Ogun for Awujale’s burial

The Awujale of Ijebuland and paramount ruler of the Ijebu people, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, was laid to rest on Monday at his private residence in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, following traditional burial rites.

The revered monarch, who passed away at the age of 91, was buried in a solemn and dignified ceremony attended by members of the royal family, Ijebu high chiefs, and prominent dignitaries from across Nigeria.

Among those who paid their last respects were Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former Ogun State Governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel, business magnate Aliko Dangote, and Fuji music icon, Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate.

Oba Adetona ascended the throne in 1960 at the young age of 26 and reigned for 64 years, making him one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Nigerian history. He was widely respected for his principled leadership, strong advocacy for traditional institutions, and efforts to modernize Ijebuland without compromising its cultural identity.

Though the final burial rites were conducted privately in accordance with Ijebu tradition, large crowds of indigenes and admirers gathered across the town to pay tribute to the monarch, describing him as “fearless,” “modern,” and “a symbol of justice and integrity.”

Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona left a lasting legacy marked by his visionary leadership, forthrightness, and tireless promotion of Ijebu interests on both the state and national stage.

His passing marks the end of a historic era in Yoruba monarchy and Nigerian traditional governance. The Ogun State Government is expected to announce a series of events in the coming days to commemorate the life and legacy of the late Awujale.
