The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has revealed that he might consider stepping down for Labour Party’s Peter Obi in the 2027 general elections, as opposition leaders intensify behind-the-scenes efforts to unseat President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Adebayo confirmed that “serious, quiet, and honourable” discussions were already underway to build a formidable opposition coalition.
“I like what he’s doing. He’s serious-minded and focused. These are meaningful conversations—not for photo shops or headlines, but for real political change,” Adebayo said, in clear reference to Obi.
When asked directly if he would step aside for Obi in 2027, Adebayo responded, “That will come later, but from what I see, I like what he’s doing.”
He dismissed the current political noise around defections and grandstanding, insisting that the future of Nigeria lay in strategic collaboration, not propaganda.
According to him, President Tinubu has already been given two years by Nigerians to prove himself—and he is failing.
“The trajectory is clear. If he continues this way, Nigerians will send him packing. He’ll return to wherever he came from,” Adebayo said.
He revealed that the SDP is engaging with political stakeholders across party lines and making quiet but steady progress toward building a credible alternative to the current government.
“This is not about courtesy calls or empty declarations. It’s about uniting for a common cause. The 2027 election is for the people, not politicians playing musical chairs,” he said.
With his bold remarks and open praise for Peter Obi, Adebayo has added momentum to speculations that a major opposition realignment is brewing—and that 2027 may offer a united front capable of reshaping Nigeria’s political future.
