Police in Kasese have launched an investigation into the tragic death of one of their own, police constable (PC) John Kanane, who is believed to have taken his own life.
Kanane, who was attached to Kasese Central Police Station, reportedly locked himself inside his room at the police barracks before turning his gun on himself on Friday evening.
According to Luke Mbusa, the Rwenzori East Police regional community liaison officer, passersby near the barracks heard a gunshot followed by fumes emanating from the room. Their alarm attracted fellow officers, who rushed to the scene and found Kanane lying in a pool of blood.
Mbusa described Kanane as a hardworking and highly regarded officer who was often deployed to secure the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) offices due to his high level of integrity.
The late officer hailed from Budaka District, and authorities are working to establish the possible motive behind the incident.
