In recent months, social media has been rife with speculation over the state ofBarack and Michelle Obama’s marriage.
Unsubstantiated claims had suggested that the former US President and First Lady were quietly headed for divorce, with gossip blogs and pundits fanning the flames of an alleged split.
But the iconic couple has now addressed the rumours publicly—and with characteristic good humour.
The chatter appears to have begun with anonymous tips and online gossip columns. Some pointed to Michelle’s extended solo travels and independent projects, while others took note of Barack’s increasingly separate public appearances and post-presidency work, claiming the pair were living apart and growing distant.
Fuel was added to the fire when Michelle did not attend the state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter in January 2025, nor did she appear at Donald Trump’s second presidential inauguration in January 2025.
Right-wing commentator Meghan McCain stirred the pot on her Citizen McCain podcast, claiming she had credible sources who confirmed the Obamas were living separate lives.Megyn Kelly also weighed in, calling the possible split a “political earthquake” if true.
Obamas Break Their Silence—With a SmileOn the latest episode of Michelle’s podcast, IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson (previously known as Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast), which she co-hosts with her brother Craig Robinson, the couple took a moment to address the swirling rumours directly.
Barack joined as a guest on the Wednesday, 16th July 2025 episode, and it wasn’t long before Craig jokingly asked, “Wait, you guys like each other?”
Michelle laughed it off, saying, “That’s the rumour mill.” Barack chimed in cheekily, “She took me back! It was touch and go for a while.” The trio continued playfully until Michelle got serious for a moment, stating, “I know, because when we aren’t [together], folks think we’re divorced.”
Shutting down the rumour firmly, she declared,“There hasn’t been one moment in our marriage where I’ve thought about quitting my man.”
She acknowledged that marriage has had its difficult moments, but insisted the journey has been overwhelmingly positive: “We’ve had some really hard times, and a lot of fun times, a lot of adventures. I have become a better person because of the man I’m married to.”
Barack responded with warmth and humour, telling her, “Don’t make me cry now.Don’t let me start tearing up.”
Michelle’s Earlier Clarifications
This wasn’t the first time Michelle had addressed the chatter. In a May 2025 interview with Steven Bartlett on The Diary of a CEO, she said, “The beauty of my husband and our partnership is that neither one of us was ever gonna quit, because that’s not who we are.”
On Work in Progress with Sophia Bush in April 2025, she explained her absences from certain public events as acts of self-preservation—not signs of a rift.
“People couldn’t fathom that I was making a choice for myself, that they had to assume my husband and I were divorcing,” she said.
And during a March 2025 appearance on Wild Card with Rachel Martin on NPR, Michelle addressed the perceived lack of public displays of affection.
“It’s the apocalypse. We don’t take selfies. We’re not posting pictures every minute. We’re 60, y’all. You’re just not gonna know what we’re doing every minute of the day.”
Barack and Michelle Obama married on 3rd October 1992 and have two daughters, Malia, 27, and Sasha, 24.Their enduring partnership, forged through years of intense political and personal pressures, has long been seen as a model of strength, resilience, and authenticity.
