Prince Abdullah al-Sabah of Kuwait has reportedly converted from Islam to Christianity, a development that has sent shockwaves through the Gulf region and beyond.
In an audio recording broadcast by Al-Haqiqa, an Arabic-language Christian satellite TV channel, a man identified as Prince Abdullah al-Sabah publicly declared his new faith.
“If they kill me… I will be with Jesus Christ forever,”the prince stated, acknowledging the risks associated with such a conversion in a predominantly Muslim country.
Following the broadcast, some members of the Kuwaiti public and online commentators have questioned the prince’s identity and royal status, with claims that he may not be a member of the ruling Al-Sabah family. However, Middle Eastern media sources maintain that the individual in the audio file used the name Abdullah al-Sabah, a name which appears multiple times in the Emir’s family lineage.
The Al-Sabah family has ruled oil-rich Kuwait for generations, and the royal family’s internal affairs are typically kept private. If verified, this conversion would be a rare and highly sensitive case in the Gulf, where changing one’s religion from Islam is often met with social and legal repercussions.
Despite intense pressure and potential danger, Prince Abdullah’s alleged decision has been interpreted by many as a powerful act of faith and courage, resonating with Christians and human rights advocates worldwide.
The story continues to generate discussion and controversy both within Kuwait and across global faith communities. There has yet to be an official statement from the Kuwaiti royal family or government on the matter.
